What do hair color levels 1–10 mean?
+
Levels measure lightness only: 1 is black, 10 is the lightest platinum blonde. Two dyes can share a level but look entirely different — level sets depth, undertone sets character.
How do I find my natural level?
+
Check virgin regrowth at the roots in daylight and match it to the scale above. Most people sit between levels 3 and 7. The Dream Hue Quiz uses your answer to rank shades that won't need drastic lifting.
Does undertone matter more than level?
+
For harmony, yes: the wrong undertone at the right level still clashes, while the right undertone forgives a level or two of difference. Start with undertone, then dial in depth.
