Hair color FAQ
Every hair color question, answered straight.
No fluff, no upsell — just clear answers on undertones, rarity, product types and how long each dye actually lasts.
What color should I dye my hair?
+
Start with your undertone, not your wish list. Warm undertones (green veins, gold jewelry flatters you) glow beside copper, caramel, honey and golden brown shades. Cool undertones (blue veins, silver jewelry) sharpen against ash brown, platinum, burgundy and jet black. Neutral undertones can wear almost anything, while olive tones shine in bronze, mahogany and espresso levels. Our free Dream Hue Quiz reads exactly these signals and ranks all 51 shades for you in two minutes.
What hair color looks best on me?
+
The most flattering hair color creates contrast and harmony at once: it echoes your skin's undertone while sitting one to three levels away from your natural base. As a rule of thumb, fair-cool skin pairs with ash blonde and burgundy, fair-warm with strawberry blonde and copper, medium-warm with caramel and chestnut, deep skin with espresso, blue-black and cherry cola. The fastest honest answer is to see them — upload a photo to the virtual try-on and compare six shades side by side on your actual face.
What is the rarest hair color?
+
Natural red hair is the rarest hair color in the world — only about 1 to 2 percent of the global population carries both copies of the MC1R gene variant that produces it, with Scotland and Ireland showing the highest concentration at up to 13 percent. Blonde follows at roughly 2 percent worldwide. Because red pigment molecules are also the largest and fade fastest, even dyed copper shades demand extra care, which is why we flag maintenance levels on every red shade we host.
What is demi permanent hair color?
+
Demi permanent hair color is a deposit-only formula mixed with a low-volume developer (usually under 10 volume) that gently opens the cuticle just enough to nestle pigment inside the hair shaft — without lifting your natural color. It blends early grays, enriches tone and adds gloss, then fades softly over roughly 24 washes with no harsh root line. Think of it as the middle ground between semi permanent tints and permanent dye.
What color is my hair?
+
Colorists describe any hair color on two axes: level (depth) and tone (temperature). Check yours in natural daylight near a window — artificial light distorts warmth. Level runs from 1 (jet black) through 4 (dark brown), 6 (light brown), 8 (blonde) to 10 (lightest blonde); tone is the twist — golden, ash, copper or red. If your hair has box-dye build-up, judge by the mid-lengths and ends rather than regrowth. Knowing your starting level matters because it decides whether your dream shade needs bleach.
How long does demi permanent hair color last?
+
Demi permanent hair color typically lasts through 12 to 24 shampoos — about four to six weeks of regular washing. Because it deposits without lifting, it fades gradually back toward your natural base instead of leaving a solid regrowth line. Hot water, clarifying shampoo, sun and heat styling pull it out faster; cold-water rinses and color-safe products stretch it. Expect noticeably shorter life on porous or previously bleached hair.
How long does semi permanent hair color last?
+
Semi permanent hair color coats the outside of the cuticle with no developer at all, so it survives only four to twelve shampoos — often fewer on freshly bleached hair, which drinks pigment fast and releases it just as quickly. It is the perfect risk-free entry point for bold statements like copper or rose gold: worst case, the experiment is gone within a fortnight.
Which hair colors hide gray the best?
+
Darker, cooler shades hide gray most convincingly: jet black, espresso, dark chocolate and ash brown blend silver strands seamlessly because gray hairs are naturally cool-toned. Warm goldens and coppers can make scattered grays read as brassy highlights instead. For serious percentages of gray, look for shades tagged 'full gray coverage' in our catalog — they map to permanent formulas engineered to fill resistant white strands completely.
What do hair color numbers mean?
+
Every professional shade label uses the international level system: the first digit is depth from 1 (black) to 10 (lightest blonde), and optional digits after a point are tonal reflects — .1 ash, .3 golden, .4 copper, .5 mahogany, .6 red, .8 pearl. So 6.34 reads as dark blonde, copper-golden. Every shade card in our catalog shows its level for exactly this reason: once you know you like level 6 copper, you can walk that recipe to any brand chart or stylist.
How accurate is the virtual try-on compared to real results?
+
Our preview renders your chosen shade strand-by-strand over your real hair using an AI segmentation model that runs entirely in your browser, so placement, flow and contrast against your skin are true to life. Two things a screen cannot simulate: how bleach will change your hair's texture and porosity before pigment lands, and subtle differences between lighting environments. Treat the try-on as the decision filter — it reliably tells you which undertone family and level suit you — then confirm the exact formula with a stylist.
